Jake Hart

I have lived in Hailsham my whole life. I was raised among the people of this constituency and educated in its schools — first at Hailsham Community College and later at its Sixth Form.

Being born with a rare genetic disorder, I have faced sight-related challenges for most of my life. By the age of 13, I had lost almost all functional vision — something that would be devastating for many.

Despite being offered places in specialist schools for the blind, I refused. I chose to stay in mainstream education because I didn’t want to be separated from my friends or treated differently. Blindness, to me, isn’t a limitation — it’s simply an extra challenge that makes life more interesting. It forces me to think differently, to adapt, and to overcome — and I’ll admit, there’s a big part of me that enjoys that.

When I first put my name forward for PPC, I was told it might be more difficult for me. That only made me smile. For me, difficulty is just another challenge — and challenge is what drives me.

I graduated with several As, including A levels in Biology and a Distinction Star in Music. During my time in education, I performed in three concerts — one of them a solo performance lasting half an hour. It was intense, exhilarating, and unforgettable.

At the end of my studies, I received the Principal’s Award — the first in the school’s 147-year history — in recognition of my determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

That same determination still defines me today. I’m currently working toward becoming a qualified counsellor, and whatever path I follow, I approach it with the same drive and grit that has carried me through life so far.

If chosen to represent Reform as your candidate, I will bring that same strength, resilience, and commitment to serve the people of this constituency with honesty and energy.
